I have been using free office suites for a few years now, not necessarily out of loyalty to the open source movement or because of my disregard of larger name brand companies, but rather simply because I do not have enough money to buy the more expensive office programs. In my search for a suitable freeware program I came across OpenOffice, and have been very impressed. The OpenOffice suite is free, yet in my humble opinion it preforms just as good as the commercial suites. It has almost all of the functionality of the commercial programs, and would seem to work just perfect for the average user.
OpenOffice is a office suite that is designed to do everything that the more expensive office suites do. It is an open source project built by people that contribute their time and skills for free. The software is released under the GNU Lesser General Public License that means its free to use, modify and distribute. The first release was a little buggy for me but version 2.0.2 was recently released and iI have not had a single issue yet. The suite comes bundled with 6 core applications. A Text editor, a presentation program similar to power point, a spreadsheet program, a database program, a graphics editor, and also a equation editor. They work great and include all the functionality that a commercial office programs would have. I am especially pleased with the spreadsheet program, it even includes a datapilot, that works just like the better known pivottables.
Overall I would give the OpenOffice suite two great big thumbs up. If you haven't tried it out your really should. My real question is why people and companies are still paying hundreds for commercial office suites. You can find the latest version at www.OpenOffice.org. It's easy to download. It's simple to install. And you just might save yourself a lot of money.
I am comming back to this review a year and a half later to update it. Open Office is amazing, absolutly. The bugs and hangups that existed in previous versions are now almost non-existant. You can do basically everything Microsoft Office can and you can do it for free. I recomend open office to anybody looking for a free alternative to the more expensive office suites.
